Steger officials are considering legal action to gain control of an parcel earmarked for a grocery.
The 30,000-square-foot site is part of a municipal parking lot on the 3200 block of South Chicago Road. The lot is used primarily by customers of a Kmart department store, but it also serves some patrons of several nearby small retail stores and a restaurant.

Village Atty. Franklin Burkey on Thursday said Steger will file suit within a month against tenants and owners of properties surrounding the parking lot. He said the suit will not include respondents to a village letter who have given up their claim to using that portion of the lot.
The village has offered a nominal $10 payment to Kmart to give up any claim to use of that parking area.
The letters and threatened legal action are the latest move in the village’s nearly yearlong attempt to open the shopping area to further development. The village has been without a full-service grocery store since a family-owned operation closed.
