Steger has become the latest community to withdraw from a municipal self-insurance pool serving the south suburbs.
Village officials this week formally notified the South Town Agency for Risk Management that Steger will discontinue its membership, effective October 1998.
Assistant village clerk Gerri Seehausen attributed the move to “a multitude of things,” including dissatisfaction with the agency’s cost and service.

Village President Lou Sherman said the village has been exploring rates from potential insurers.
Steger, one of the founders of the agency in 1981, paid $121,000 in 1996 for insurance coverage.
“The premium is a big factor,” Seehausen said this week. But she was quick to note the village also wanted to give Steger-based insurance agents a chance.
Seehausen said, “We can get our insurance from local people at the same price and get basically the same level of insurance.” .
A spokesman for Country Club Hills said his village also contacted STARM this week to report its intention to leave.
Crete, Flossmoor, Homewood and Lansing previously notified the South Town agency in September that they intend to drop out in October 1998.
The South Town Agency for Risk Management’s remaining members include Burnham, Dixmoor, East Hazel Crest, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, Matteson, Oak Forest, Orland Hills, Posen, Sauk Village, Steger, Tinley Park and University Park.
