Tom Russell
Song of the West (HMG/Hightone) (star) (star) (star)
Born on a ranch just outside Los Angeles, Russell has always displayed an affinity for the high lonesome sounds of the west (“The Sky Above, the Mud Below,” “The John Bull Tin”) and romantic border legends (“Gallo del Cielo,” “El Llano Estacado”). In this richly evocative CD, his pure baritone voice adds an almost heroic texture — and no small amount of drama — to his own fine story-songs, hand-me-down ballads and collaborations with Canadian cowpoke Ian Tyson.
