Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If any place is a Dumpling Zone natural, it’s the Original Dumpling House in southwest suburban Stickney. This 40-plus-year-old Czech eatery cranks out stickney-to-your-ribs dinners, southwest suburban style: tons of extras-like their steamed savory dumplings-are included with the meal. But believe it or not, DZ didn’t roll out there on a recent Friday night for the restaurant’s regular dumplings-which, frankly, we find a bit too much like sliced-up bread. We made the pilgrimage to try their Friday fruit dumplings. These fluffy balls of dough are filled with seasonal fruits such as peaches, plums or blueberries; they’re topped with sweet pot cheese and cinnamon sugar, then steamed and served in a pool of butter. Be warned, these rich, softball-sized creations are enough to feed two, so remember to leave room. You can also find fruit dumplings on select days of the week at Bohemian Crystal in Westmont, Czech Plaza in Berwyn and the Golden Duck in Downers Grove.
