Thursday’s sentencing hearing for Bonzell L. Joyner for the 1994 shooting death of a 19-year-old College of DuPage student has been delayed until Dec. 4.

Joyner’s attorney, David Kliment, asked Kane County Circuit Court Judge Donald C. Hudson for the delay on Tuesday, citing a need for more time to prepare.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Joyner, 22, of Aurora. A Kane County jury convicted Joyner earlier this year of ending a horrifying gang beating when he walked behind a dazed Armando Mendez and fired a single bullet into his head.
Ten men were charged in the killing. Three, including Joyner, were convicted of murder; six reached plea agreements to lesser charges; and one was acquitted.
