Police said late Wednesday that they will conduct a roadside checkpoint in the village this weekend in an effort to weed out drunken drivers.
Officials would not disclose the day or the location of the checkpoint, but, “It will be conducted at a time and location to provide maximum opportunity for the detection and apprehension of motorists who drive under the influence,” said Downers Grove Police Sgt. Tim Gunn.
In addition to drunken drivers or those driving under the influence of drugs, police will check for motorists without valid driver’s licenses or insurance, or those operating unsafe vehicles.
Authorities said they also will look for proper use of seat belts and child safety seats.
Though some drivers might get irritated by the traffic slowdown caused by a roadside checkpoint, police asked for patience on the part of the motoring public and said they hope residents realize the event’s goal is safety.
