The Cook County Highway Department is planning a major overhaul of Central Avenue between 155th Street and Margie Lane, which is south of 159th Street.
Central Avenue is one of several major thoroughfares in the city. Between 159th and 155th Streets, residents have access to the Jewel and Dominick’s food stores, the post office, Park District health club, Acorn Library, the city municipal complex and Oak Forest High School.
Plans call for widening the two-lane road to three lanes for easier turn access, as well as installing curbs and drainage gutters.
The Cook County Board is expected to give its final approval for the project Tuesday. Work would begin in spring 1998.
