Mark Zaban isn’t about to ask seven students to take the rest of the year off.
That’s not to say it hasn’t crossed the Rich East soccer coach’s mind.
“I don’t think there is any question that if we were Class A, we would make the final eight,” Zaban said. His petition was denied Monday by the IHSA to play in Class A despite his school’s enrollment of 1,296 being just seven students over the cutoff. “We might be one of the top three teams in the state (in Class A).”
Instead, the Rockets are just another Class AA team. Check that, after Monday’s 2-0 shutout of Crete-Monee, just another 13-0 (6-0 in the SICA South) Class AA team that has only lost only one game in two years (34-1-1).
Mike Thompson scored both goals for the Rockets Monday, while Conor McBurney posted his 10h shutout.
Argo 5, Richards 1: Two goals by Dennis Gaytan lifted Argo (9-1-3, 6-1) in the SICA North.
