Waco Brothers
Do You Think About Me? (Bloodshot) (star) (star) (star)
This collection of studio outtakes and two new cover versions is less cohesive than local heroes the Waco Brothers’ first two CDs. The country-punk sextet plays them all with free-spirited urgency, though, deftly mixing boozy vocals, crunching guitars, bright mandolin and steel guitars and an unstoppable rhythm section. Backed by the Poi Dog horns, they tip their Stetsons to “Exile on Main Street” on the brass-fueled title track. “Arizona Rose” is a lovely slice of pure honky-tonk heartbreak, “Napa Valley” sparkles like the cheap wine it champions, and a ferocious guitar groove drives the churning “South Bend.”
