There are honey bees, sewing bees and spelling bees, but the bee liked most by members of Hinsdale’s Union Church is the sorting bee held Friday mornings in the Hinsdale home of Ann Baab.

Sis Erdmann, Diddy Hora, Jenny Kubitschek, Betty Nelson, Roz Oetking and occasional fill-ins gather in Baab’s garage and basement to sift and winnow mounds of gently used merchandise donated to the church’s annual Resale, a five-hour fundraiser held the first Thursday morning of October. Proceeds go to several charitable organizations.

“We call ourselves the Grandmothers’ Garage Group,” said Baab, an octogenarian who offered her home as the sorting site several years ago. “It’s volume that makes a sale successful. People get rid of things throughout the year, so it’s important to have a place where stuff can be stored.”

“We’ll have 275 to 300 volunteers arranging, pricing and selling merchandise,” said Linda Kengott, a coordinator of the event. “Many of them have been doing this since the Resale began 33 years ago. Last year’s effort brought in almost $35,000.”

Most men’s and women’s clothing ranges from $2 to $10; sweaters cost $2 to $8. Bicycles begin at $5, with jewelry and holiday decorations starting at 25 cents.

Nothing goes to waste. When the sale ends, Barb Keller and her helpers will pack up leftovers for pickup by 15 charities.

The Resale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at 117 S. Garfield Ave., Hinsdale. Call 630-323-4303 for information.
