The final act of the Cherry Hill School site drama played out Tuesday night when the New Lenox Village Board voted to deed a municipally owned section of the property to New Lenox Elementary District 122.

Trustees Patrick Flynn and Tom Weigel voted against the motion to deed the land to the school board.

An agreement reached last week between the school board and residents of the Cherry Hill subdivision paved the way for the transfer of the village’s 1.25 acres on the proposed school site at 2800 Washington St.

The District 122 Board asked the village to cede the land to it in July. Trustees held off in the face of neighborhood concern over school building plans, asking school officials to negotiate with neighbors.

Residents near the school site express concern about a building plan they said would cut significantly into the open space traditionally used as a park.

The agreement between the school district and the neighbors calls for a reduction in the number of parking places, creation of a 111-foot buffer zone and landscape screening of the lot.

Construction is to begin on a new Cherry Hill School, targeted to become the district’s kindergarten center, next summer.
