For one night Sandburg’s volleyball team had an answer for everything.
The starting six for the Eagles (7-3, 2-0) neutralized No. 6 Lockport’s hitters and came away with a 13-15, 15-8, 15-9 upset Tuesday night in Orland Park.

“We didn’t win this game with key players,” Sandburg coach Joann Holverson said. “We won this game with six players. We had to have the passing, we had to have Stephanie (Brandys) setting, we had to have blocking to take away the confidence of the Lockport hitters.”
Katie Engel led the way with 14 kills and five blocks and Jenni Fansan chipped in with 10 kills and four blocks. Brandys had 47 assists and 13 digs while Sarah Kustok had 14 digs and nine kills.
“Not taking anything away from Sandburg,” said Lockport coach Julia Hudson, whose Porters fell to 6-3, 0-2 in the SICA West. “But we’re just a very average team right now. I told Joann after the game that they really should have won in two games.”
Stephanie Jackson led Lockport with nine kills and 13 digs.
Stagg d. Joliet 15-0, 15-12: Jenelle Hart (11 kills, three blocks) and Janet Golen (nine kills, 10 digs) paced the top-ranked Chargers (12-0, 2-0) in the SICA West.
Mother McAuley d. St. Ignatius 15-3, 11-15, 15-4: Robyn Goukas had seven blocks and Nicole Kacor 15 kills as the third-ranked Mighty Macs (8-1, 3-0) pulled out the GCAC Red match in three games. Setter Katie Brasher had 30 assists for Mother McAuley.
Queen of Peace d. Providence 15-6, 9-15, 15-12: Angie Banys and Melissa Vandrey each had seven kills and Colleen Donahue served five aces as host Queen of Peace (12-2) upset No. 4 Providence (10-2).
Huntley d. Marengo 15-7, 11-15, 15-12: Becky Weber had 16 kills and eight aces to lead No. 8 Huntley in the Big Northern (10-1, 2-0).
Larkin d. DeKalb 15-3, 15-13: Jill Engel served six aces in Game 1 and Vicki Lublow had nine kills for the match as No. 10 Larkin improved to 18-1-1, 5-0 in the Upstate Eight.
Crystal Lake Central d. Grayslake 15-3, 15-6: Karen Milborn and Heather Haw had seven kills apiece to pace the Tigers (15-2, 5-0) to their fifth straight in the Fox Valley.
Crystal Lake South d. Prairie Ridge 16-14, 15-8: Rachel Cavanaugh had nine kills and Kirsten Klingsick 11 service points for the Gators (7-3-1, 4-1 Fox Valley).
Glenbard South d. Batavia 12-15, 15-11, 15-9: Mary Sabatino had 23 assists and Ann Lopata had eight kills to lead Glenbard South (10-1, 2-0) in the Suburban Prairie conference.
Illiana Christian d. Luther North 15-3, 15-5: Caryn Boer’s five kills lifted Illiana (11-2, 2-0) in the Private School League.
Lane Tech d. Von Steuben 15-1, 15-7: Jamiee Toczek (eight kills) and Michelle Velez (seven assists) led the way for Lane (11-3, 4-0) in the Public Red North.
Lincoln Park d. Young 15-12, 17-15: Jill Fantozzi had 10 kills to lead Lincoln Park (8-1-4, 4-0) in the Public North Central.
Lincoln-Way d. Andrew 15-7, 15-3: The Knights (8-1, 2-0) swept the SICA West match as Kristen Clements tallied five blocks and five kills.
Loyola d. Mt. Assisi 15-10, 16-14: Jenni Mengelt had 19 assists and Katie Hammond had 10 kills and five aces for Loyola (9-3).
Marian Catholic d. St. Viator 15-3, 15-1: Tina Huisenga served 10 straight points, including five aces, to close out Game 2 for Marian (7-2, 1-0) in the East Suburban Catholic.
Naperville Central d. Glenbard East 15-3, 15-7: The Redhawks (12-1-2, 5-0 DuPage Valley) swept Glenbard East (8-7, 1-4) behind five kills and 14 assists by Elizabeth Gower.
Wilmington d. Coal City 10-15, 15-3, 15-9: Kathy Maertin served five aces to lead undefeated Wilmington (15-0-1).
