With multiple projects, such as spring cleaning, tree planting, beautification awards and plans to publish a biannual newsletter, the Mokena Environmental Commission needs more members, trustees said this week.
In response, the Village Board voted Monday to expand membership from five to seven.
Appointed to the commission were Brandon Wilson, who founded the Environmental Action Club at Lincoln-Way High School, and Susan Melcher, a former recording secretary for the village. Both Wilson and Melcher recently served as judges for the Environmental Commission Beautification Awards program.
The commission holds monthly meetings and sponsors numerous activities. One of the newest projects is aimed at upgrading the deteriorating water quality of a local retention pond.
