My question to baseball is, what’s the problem? It seems to me the game already is geographically aligned. Natural rivals like the Dodgers and Giants, Yankees and Red Sox already exist. Atlanta no longer is in the West. There is nothing wrong with the geography of baseball. There just aren’t enough intra-divisional games. If baseball truly is concerned about geographical rivalries, all it needs to do is unbalance its schedule. Allow more games within the division. Baseball got radical enough this season. It gave us interleague play and interleague play gave the game a 20.2 percent attendance boost. Realignment would take away the magic of interleague play. Who would care about an interleague game between Philadelphia and St. Louis? Geography isn’t a problem. Baseball just has too many bad teams. Too many poor draws. Realignment? No plan works. So why realign? It doesn’t make sense.
