Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

News from the world of Pre-Riverdance Irish Music!

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to win an All-Ireland championship on any instrument? Do you have any idea how hard it would be to win one on the tin whistle? It is practically the national folk instrument and very well played by thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people.

So, Larry Nugent, who has lived in America (Cago area) since 1988, went back to Ireland for the holidays in 1994, entered the competition and became the All Ireland tin whistle champion.

Do you have any idea how hard it would be to do that twice?

He won it in 1995, too.

It runs in the family.

His late father was All-Ireland fiddle champion.

Go to the Abbey Pub, at 38 N. Elston Ave., on Friday, put down your $1 and listen to how good Nugent is. He has been a regular on the Cago Irish music scene for a long time and is an extraordinary whistle and flute player. He’ll be on stage with Arty McGlynn and Jean-Michel Veillon, the French Celtic flutist.
