Dandy Warhols
The Dandy Warhols Come Down (Capitol) (star) (star)
Droning psychedelic grooves are fun but only for so long, and the Dandy Warhols take them much farther on their hourlong-plus major label debut. The mix of childishly simple melodies, drawn-out group choruses, sci-fi guitars and buzzing sound effects is catchy at first; a muscular guitar riff powers the opening song, “Be-In.” Unfortunately, a self-indulgent repetition marks most of the songs, typified by the three-word chant “I Love You,” and makes it hard to pay attention for long. The Dandy Warhols need more songs like “Cool as Kim Deal,” with its punchy dose of garage rock and catchy, sugar-sweet melody. Instead, the nine-minute finale, “The Creep Out,” is more typical of how the band stretches their jams too long and spreads their songs too thin.
