The Mokena Planning Commission on Thursday night recommended approval of a plan to build a bank on the northwest corner of La Grange and LaPorte Roads.

Tad Lagestee, representing the developer Lagestee-Mulder of South Holland, said his firm owns 14 acres along La Grange Road and the bank would be the first business built there. Ultimately, the firm also intends to build a shopping center, he said.

“We are in talks with a number of different anchors, both grocery and non-grocery,” Lagestee said.

Construction of the two-story brick-and-limestone bank building is expected to be completed in the spring. The shopping center is expected to be in place within the next year or two, Lagestee said.

Village officials are seeking to expand the town’s commercial base to ease the tax burden on homeowners.

To foster commercial development the Village Board has formed a concept plan review committee and a zoning ordinance review board.
