A compromise reached by New Lenox Elementary School District 122 and homeowners in the Cherry Hill subdivision paved the way Tuesday night for the school district to gain village land on the site.

School board member Jeanne Kragie said the board has agreed to cut eight parking places from a proposed lot, screen parking areas with plantings and establish a 111-foot buffer next to residential land.

The agreement further calls for communication between school officials and the homeowners and a collaboration between the school board and the Park District to establish and maintain a park at the school site.

Village Board members said they will vote next week on whether to turn over 1.25 acres the village owns at the Cherry Hill School site on Washington Street.

The dispute over the school site began when residents of the Cherry Hill subdivision complained that the school district’s building plan reduced the open space traditionally used as a neighborhood park.

School board members and some homeowners have met to discuss their differences in the last few months, resulting in the agreement.

Construction on the new building at 2800 Washington St. is to begin in June.
