Two local environmental groups have joined forces to spruce up their little corner of the planet as part of a worldwide cleanup effort scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

Wheaton-based group DuPage Clean and Beautiful, Inc., and the Lisle-based DuPage Environmental Awareness Center are coordinating countywide cleanup projects in conjunction with a United Nations program called “Clean Up the World.”

Groups and individuals are being sought to clean up neighborhood parks, waterways, fields, beaches, roadsides, preserves and other areas. Volunteers may call 630-665-0808 to suggest a cleanup project or be assigned to a project.

According to T. Ashley Wagner, program coordinator for DuPage Clean and Beautiful, volunteers already have targeted sites in Lombard, Addison, Westmont and Naperville.

“Around six groups of volunteers have signed up so far, and we are hoping for more,” Wagner said.

The international cleanup effort evolved from a 1988 “Clean Up Sydney Harbor Day” in Australia, said sponsors, and went global in 1993.

This year marks the first time DuPage environmental organizations have teamed up to participate, Wagner said.
