With all the Oktoberfest celebrations going on this week and next, we thought it was time to explore the wonderful world of German dumplings, in particular kartofel knudel (potato dumpling). During a recent end-of-the-summer party at a friend’s house, we had a chance to sit and chat with his German grandmother, who told us all about these hefty, slighty chewy, Bavarian-style balls of potato dough boiled up and served with pork roasts or sauerbratens. Her picks for the best in the city are the kartofel knudel at the 76-year-old Golden Ox on Clybourn Ave. ($2) and especially the gravy-covered ones at Chicago Brauhaus. We also hear that Edelweiss in Norridge serves them for a couple bucks.
