Joy Lynn White
The Lucky Few (Little Dog) (star) (star) (star) 1/2
In all the media fury over teenage country stars, it’s easy to forget that there are some immensely talented women out there who haven’t yet benefited from feature stories in People magazine. White is one of those critically acclaimed artists who sings like a honky-tonk angel but still can’t get arrested in Nashville. In “The Lucky Few,” she has moved over to Pete Anderson’s Little Dog label and gets some able assistance from Dwight Yoakam and his fine band of California pickers, Marty Stuart, Jim Lauderdale and Suzi Ragsdale. White has a fiery and highly expressive vocal style that captures big R&B moments (“Why Do I Love You”) and more gentle inclinations before ripping into a heartsick thumper like Lucinda Williams’ “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad.”
