Gillian Welch: Even if you find the faux Appalachian persona she creates with her thrift store dress, old lady shoes and twangy singing voice a little much, you can’t deny the magic Gillian Welch makes when her voice and guitar intertwine with those of her partner, David Rawlings. And it was this magic that mesmerized wrapt listeners who came to hear the Los Angeles-native and Rawlings spin their stark folky bluegrass tales of lost loves, moonshine, orphanhood and spirituality for two sets at the Old Town School of Folk Music Friday night. Between the subject matter, simple acoustic arrangements and the spare unpolished harmonies, each song felt like a snap shot from a much earlier age. And while Welch played a few lovely new songs, she concentrated on material from her quietly stunning ’96 debut “Revival,” which includes her compact and hauntingly familiar “Orphan Girl.”
