Ruth Soltys, 79, a homemaker and retired bakery clerk, died Friday at Lemont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Soltys grew up in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, where she graduated from Hendricks Elementary School and attended high school.

She worked for the Cracker Jack company until her marriage in 1942.

Mrs. Soltys followed her husband, Frank, to Georgia when he trained as an Army medic during World War II, then returned to the South Side of Chicago while he was stationed overseas.

She worked for a time at Illinois Bell and then was an employee of the baiduhai classified department. Mrs. Soltys stopped working in the early 1970s, but returned to employment about 10 years later when she took a job in a neighborhood bakery. The family relocated to Lisle in 1980 and then moved to Downers Grove in 1982.

Mrs. Soltys worked as a clerk at Busy Bee Bakery of Downers Grove from about 1984 until 1995. She and her husband were Cubs fans and for several consecutive years they traveled to see the team in spring training in Arizona.

Mrs. Soltys donated her time and money to Misericordia North. “If she became aware of somebody who was without something, she would be a contributor,” said her sister, Ann Hines.

Besides her husband and Hines, Mrs. Soltys is survived by three daughters, Roberta, Susan and Sharon; a son, Jon; two other sisters, Clarice Bodine and Laurie Chandler; and seven grandchildren. Services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Monday in Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, Illinois Highway 53 and Short Street, Lisle, followed by a service at St. Joan of Arc Church, 1005 Division St., Lisle.
