Cory Paus hopes to become UCLA’s starting quarterback next year in California.
But the Bruins might also want to take a look at the Lincoln-Way signal-caller’s placekicking ability.
After Paus hit Matt Joseph with a 10-yard scoring pass to forge a 32-32 overtime deadlock with Andrew Friday night in Tinley Park, Paus kicked the extra point to give the fourth-ranked Knights (2-0) the 33-32 victory.
Paus was subbing for injured kicker Jay Huff, who had missed two extra points earlier in the game.
“I wasn’t going to miss that kick to save my life,” said Paus, who was 13 of 20 for 101 yards and two touchdowns and run 20 yards for an additional score.
“When the game is on the line, you have to go to Cory,” said Lincoln-Way coach Rob Glielmi.
Tim Brach gave Andrew the lead in the extra session with a 3-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed.
Tailback Rich Schutt led the Lincoln-Way attack with 118 yards and two touchdowns, one of which covered 79 yards. But even with the big statistics against it, Andrew had a chance to win in regulation until Mike Schelling’s 25-yard field goal attempt went wide.
P.J. Miller (86 yards) and Dan Gomez (83 yards) each scored twice for Andrew (1-1).
Providence 48, Hales Franciscan 12: Coach Matt Senffner won his 200th game, all at Providence, as the top-ranked Celtics won their 44th straight and second in a row for the 1997 season. The victory tied East St. Louis for the second longest streak in state history.
Justin Ruggio led the 510-yard attack with 257 yards on 25 carries and four touchdowns. Adam O’Reel added a 15-yard scoring strike to Eric Steinbach.
“I’ve been fortunate to have quality people all around me and good kids to work with,” said Senffner. “I don’t care about it being a 200th win. Right now I’m just thinking about (our next game with) St. Patrick.”
Hales (1-1) got touchdowns from Jumanne and Talib Wise.
Evanston 41, Glenbrook North 0: Siaka Massaquoi rushed for 202 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of 1, 26 and 45 yards to lead the fifth-ranked Wildkits (2-0).

Richards 45, Calumet 6: The 16th-ranked Bulldogs’ run-oriented attack went to the air, with the combination of Cody Lettiere and Morgan Thompson doing all the damage. Lettiere also found Thompson again before the end of the first with a 44-yard touchdown pass.
