Many TV shows for children find a second life on videos. They depict familiar characters that are good, bad and often educational.
Barney may be a bulbous purple dinosaur, but when he sings “Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay” on “Barney’s Musical Scrapbook” he is no more scary than a marshmallow. Arthur, in such video episodes from his TV show as “Arthur Writes a Story,” is always adorable. Although near retirement, Lamb Chop is still as rambunctious as ever on video.
Ernie from “Sesame Street” is forever young, too, as he and his friends find ways to teach in “1, 2, 3 Count With Me.”
Bananas in Pyjamas may be newcomers, but they already know how to play sardines and dance all night in “Pyjama Party.” The yellow polliwog Binyah appears with songs and stories in various episodes of “Gullah, Gullah Island.” The dog of many disguises, Wishbone, stars in videos including “Frankenbone” and “Bone of Arc.”
Naughtiness makes its way to video with the terrible toddlers in “A Rugrats Vacation” and others featuring Ren the scrawny chihuahua and his sidekick Stimpy. The Animaniacs, in videos that include “Animaniacs Stew” and “The Warner Escape,” know how to create lots of looniness.
Adult TV characters get into the video act, too. They include wacky Bill Nye the Science Guy, and three females: the intrepid teacher Ms. Frizzle with her Magic School Bus, the globe-trotting Carmen Sandiego and the clown Loonette who knows how to please preschoolers in “The Big, Comfy Couch.”
A TV classic is also back -on video. Chicago’s pioneering puppets, Kukla and Ollie, have returned with Fran on new releases of old favorites, which proves that good TV shows never die – they just move to videoland.
