Freshmen entering Maine Township’s three high schools next fall could face stiffer social science requirements for graduation under a proposal presented to District 207 officials this week.

The proposal calls for raising the number of required social science credits from the current level of two to 2 1/2 for the class of 2002, according to Dave Renz, chairman of the social science department at Maine East High School.

The district currently requires one year of basic U.S. history, a semester in government and one semester-long elective, said Renz.

Under the new proposal, the elective would be dropped in favor of one year in the history of the western world or a yearlong course in world cultures.
