Bensenville elementary school teachers are working under a new four-year contract that gives them raises and better benefits in exchange for a longer workday and work year.

Pay for beginning teachers with bachelor’s degrees will increase to $28,279 from $26,102 in the 2001-02 school year. Over four years, top pay for a teacher with a master’s degree and 45 additional hours of college credit will go to $64,732 from the current $55,598.

Bensenville Elementary School District 2 will increase its contributions to teachers’ pensions, health and dental insurance and life insurance.

Teachers will add five days to the year and two hours to the 38-hour workweek. Last year, the average pay of $40,085 for Bensenville teachers ranked 21st among 30 DuPage elementary districts.
