Aldermen voted 6-1 this week to give preliminary approval to a third six-month extension to the city cable TV supplier, TCI of Illinois, despite unsuccessful efforts to get a longer-term contract.

“In view of TCI’s recent performance, it is difficult to approve an extension to the franchise agreement,” said assistant city manager Shari Carter. “On the other hand, TCI is the city’s only cable provider.”

Ald. Tony Arredia said TCI’s staff has failed to return his telephone queries and has shown up unprepared for negotiations. Arredia voted against the extension.

Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Mt. Prospect and Schaumburg have faced similar frustrations with TCI but recently also have passed six-month extensions.

Des Plaines officials are negotiating to sign up Ameritech as an alternative.
