Authorities said they believe they know the identity of a man killed in a fiery auto accident early Monday in unincorporated Antioch, but his name is being withheld until dental records can be checked.

The victim has been tentatively identified as a 38-year-old Palatine man.

The man was killed when his car ran off the road and struck a propane tank attached to a house at 19478 Illinois Highway 173.

The victim was westbound on Illinois 173 in his 1992 Dodge Ram pickup at about 1 a.m. Monday when he rear-ended another vehicle traveling in the same direction, Lake County sheriff’s police said.

The pickup then left the roadway and struck the propane tank. The collision ignited a fire that engulfed both the truck and the house.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:20 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner’s office. No one was in the house at the time. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

Sheriff’s police said they believe the driver may have had a heart attack prior to the crash, because an autopsy revealed he had heart problems.

Witnesses said he was spotted in a nearby tavern before the accident. Tests for alcohol and drugs were being conducted.
