Students who drive to York High School will discover that it’s a little tougher to find street parking near the school this fall.
But residents who have long complained about parked vehicles impeding their thoroughfares likely will breathe a sigh of relief.
City workers will begin posting no-parking signs along some residential streets just north of the school, at 355 W. St. Charles Rd., in the next week to give residents more room.
As in many neighborhoods that include a high school, residents have complained that student vehicles snarl traffic, block access to driveways and pose a safety hazard. With more than 1,000 York High students allowed to drive, the competition for the school’s 184 parking spaces is keen and leads most student commuters to battle for parking in residential areas.
Only seniors in the school’s work-study program and seniors with jobs are likely to get school parking permits because of the space limitations, officials said.
