player ready...Making faces: There have been some strange faces around Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington lately. They were not the result of plastic surgery but of where a person’s birth date fell on the medicine wheel of some Native American tribes.
They are masks made in the Pathways to Creative Spirit class taught by Crystal Lake art therapist Mary Farrell. The Native American art and culture session was offered at the hospital this summer.
“They make the masks from their own faces and then decorate them according to their birth date, which means it will have a moon or other symbols on it,” Farrell said.
Farrell, who helps people express themselves creatively to increase self-awareness, confidence and relaxation through art expression, periodically teaches the class during the year as a tribute to the country’s Native American heritage.
“I’m not an expert in the culture. I’m learning as we go. But it’s so much fun sharing this interest of mine with others,” Farrell said.
She has no fall class scheduled yet but will teach another session if people are interested. Call 847-381-9600, ext. 5405.
