Members of a DuPage County Board committee balked Monday at approving a new no-bid consulting contract with the daughter of a board member.
Transportation Committee members raised questions about the proposed contract with Susan Peterson, the 34-year-old daughter of board member Alice Peterson (R-Woodridge). The committee voted to delay action until the next committee meeting.
County officials want to pay $40 an hour–up to $13,000–through the end of November to Susan Peterson to organize property-acquisition files and determine what paperwork should be entered into the highway department’s new imaging system. Peterson, who has a background in real estate and computers, worked for the department for several months earlier this year to help update property-acquisition files.

Alice Peterson is County Board vice chairman and chairs the board’s Public Works Committee.
Charles Tokarski, county transportation chief, said Susan Peterson’s real estate background would allow her to “identify various documents without the need to consult with staff.”
Under county policy, the highway department’s contract with Susan Peterson did not require advance approval of the board or the Transportation Committee because it was not to exceed $9,000. The proposed contract requires only committee approval.
