A 27-year-old Chicago man was shot and killed a West Side neighborhood early Sunday after attending a party in a nearby tavern, police said.

Calvin Payton, of the 2200 block of South Hamlin Avenue, was shot once in the head and once in the side, according to Harrison Area Sgt. Michael Chasen. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Medical Center.

Three other partygoers also were injured by unidentified gunmen, Chasen said.

Police said they believe the shooters had gone to the tavern, interrupted the party and then left.

The assailants waited nearby until the gathering broke up just before 2:30 a.m., then opened fire on the departing revelers in the 3400 block of West Cermak Road, police theorized.

Christian Payton, 31, of the 6200 block of South Park Shore East Court, was shot once in the right arm, police said.

A bullet also struck the lower body of Devine Wilson, 21, of the 8700 block of South Cregier Avenue, police said.

Both were listed in fair condition Sunday evening at Mt. Sinai Hospital, according to nursing supervisor Asha Babani.

Cornelius Payton, 27, of the 10200 block of South Walden Parkway, was shot in the right leg, Chasen said. He was treated and released from St. Anthony Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor.

Chasen said he did not know if any of the men involved in the incident are related.

In an unrelated shooting, a 5-year-old boy was wounded Saturday afternoon on the South Side during an exchange of gunfire that police said they believe was gang-related.

The child was released at noon Sunday from Cook County Hospital, where he had been treated for a wound to his thigh, according to a night administrator at the hospital.

A 22-year-old man wounded in the same shooting, in the 4600 block of South Evans Avenue, remained in critical condition, the administrator said.

Still listed in critical condition at Cook County Hospital with a head wound was Keith Turnipseed, 22, who lives in the 4700 block of South Langley Avenue near the shooting site, authorities said.

Wentworth Area police said witnesses told them the the boy and Turnipseed were shot when four men opened fire as they stood in front of a house on Langley Avenue.

The car carrying the four alleged gunmen later crashed, and they ran away, according to police reports.
