A multi-million-dollar soundproofing project at Maine West High School, scheduled to be completed by the start of school next Wednesday, is expected to drag into mid-October, school and project officials said Wednesday night.
A similar but less extensive soundproofing project at Maine South High School should wrap up within a few weeks after school opens, officials said.
Nevertheless, school officials said at a meeting of the District 207 Building and Grounds Committee, all classes are expected to begin on time.
One reason for the delay is that the manufacturers of windows are behind because of the high volume of orders in the current healthy economy, said Kim Clawson, project manager with OWP&P, a Deerfield firm that is lead architect on the project.
Paul J. Leathem, principal of Maine West, said one wing of the school, which houses shop classes, remains torn up with ceiling work. Some classes in that wing will have to be held elsewhere.
