Ensuring the required storm-water detention area is safe for children is the key problem in changing Cherry Hill School construction plans, school officials told the Village Board this week.

Construction plans will have to be changed if the existing school built in 1962 is turned over to the park board or the village instead of being torn down, School District 122 Supt. Tom Mullins said.

A storm-water detention area is expected to occupy the site of the old school.

Since the new Cherry Hill School is to be the kindergarten center for the district, school officials need a lot of space for storm-water detention to keep the area shallow enough not to endanger small children.

Allowing time for the village or the park to decide on the building won’t delay work, he said. The Cherry Hill building isn’t scheduled for demolition until June 1998, he said.
