Cherry Hill School might escape the wrecking ball if either the village or the Park District can afford rehab costs.

Trustee Patrick Flynn said Park District officials “have an extreme interest” in using the building for pre-school programs.

The building is not scheduled to be demolished until June 1998, School District 122 Supt.Tom Mullins said. Trustee Dave Smith suggested taking over the building last week.

The Cherry Hill School building could be used as additional office space for a growing village staff, or the Park District could use some of the building to house recreational programs, he said.

Putting the building to use also would save District 122 the cost of demolition, Smith said.

Cherry Hill School, built in the 1960s, originally was slated for remodeling, but expensive safety and drainage requirements made it more cost-effective to tear down the old school and build a new one, according to the school board.
