Aldermen voted 5-3 to tentatively approve a $103,000 plan to remodel the interior lobby of the Des Plaines Civic Center, 1430 Miner St.. The renovation would be the first time the building, constructed in 1974, has seen any extensive improvements. Although officials submitted proposal requests to 18 design firms, City Engineer Scott Shirley said the only bid came from Hanna Design Group Inc. of Rolling Meadows. That firm’s bid won approval on first reading during Monday night’s meeting.
Ald. Carla Brookman objected to awarding the renovation contract without first seeking more competitive bids.
“How do we know if this price is really competitive or not?” she said.
Aldermen Patricia Beauvais and Tom Christiansen also voted against awarding the bid.
