The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to give final approval to a plan to lower the speed limits along Elmhurst’s residential streets.
Most side streets in the city have 30 m.p.h. speed limits, although lower limits were posted along larger thoroughfares such as Spring Road and Robert T. Palmer Drive, officials said.
Lowering the speed limits along residential side streets to 25 m.p.h. will promote safer conditions, reduce cut-through traffic and possibly reduce the perception that traffic moves faster on side streets than it does on main thoroughfares, police and city officials said.
Members of the City Council’s Public Affairs and Safety Committee had recommended the reduction, and staff members from the city’s Police, Fire and Public Works Departments have said they support the move.
Among those backing the action was Police Chief John Millner.
