The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to staff the newly refurbished visitors center at the Volo Bog State Natural Area.
Volunteers are needed for three positions: gift shop attendant, docent and naturalist. Applications are being accepted through Aug. 31.
Volo Bog is looking for more than three people to fill the slots because volunteers work on a rotating basis.
No experience is necessary. Naturalist volunteers lead one-hour tours each Saturday and Sunday through the preserve. The docents lead visitors through the exhibits in the visitor center.

The 870-acre Volo Bog is home to the state’s only remaining open-water quaking bog, where plants and trees take root on a floating mat of earth. The visitors center, which opened in 1980, is in an old dairy barn and has been closed since November for renovation. It is slated to reopen this fall.
