A Central Illinois teenager who suffered a fatal asthma attack after leaving Six Flags Great America refused medical treatment from park paramedics, authorities said Tuesday.

Keynon Lewis, 18, of Danville, had an attack outside the Jewel-Osco at 6509 Grand Ave. in Gurnee Friday as his cousin was inside the store getting medication, Gurnee Deputy Fire Chief Fred Friedl said.

Lewis had breathing problems while inside the theme park but opted to go to the pharmacy rather than accept treatment from paramedics at Great America, authorities said.

“Our first-aid technicians responded to a call, and the guest chose to leave the park,” spokeswoman Connie Costello said.

Lewis’ cousin came out of the store and found Lewis unresponsive. The teenager was in full cardiac arrest by the time paramedics arrived. He died in St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan, officials said. The asthma attack was the cause of death, Lake County Coroner Barbara Richardson said.
