David Schrader: The organist is frequently an invisible presence in concerts; at the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra’s weekend performances of Samuel Barber’s Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra, Op. 36, organist David Schrader was very much front and center. The piece is a tour de force for the soloist, and Schrader, one of Chicago’s premiere keyboard players, gave a virtuoso reading on Saturday night. The concert opened with Barber’s poignant, then powerful Symphony No. 1, Op. 9; the orchestra attacked it hesitantly, but came together halfway through. The second half of the performance was an unexceptional rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. Throughout the evening, conductor Eiji Oue seemed to be interested only in the faster, louder sections.
