Plan commissioners say they will not recommend filing a legal objection to a proposed cement plant on unincorporated land west of the village.
The village doesn’t have jurisdiction over unincorporated land, but it can file legal objections with the Will County Board to development proposals for land within 1 1/2 miles of its boundaries.
Kerry Weber, attorney for Davidson Readi-Mix, said recently the proposed plant at 22645 Cherry Hill Rd. will be “neighbor-friendly.”
The company, which is seeking a special use permit from Will County, will limit hours of operation and screen its property with fencing and landscaping.
Owner Tom Davidson said his plan calls for dust-control measures, water recycling and indoor truck loading.
Proper screening is of special concern to New Lenox officials, who expect land east of the site to become a residential development, said Carrie Hansen, planning and development administrator for the village.
Keeping the operation quiet and clean is crucial if homes are to be built nearby, commissioner Robert Faford said.
But homes aren’t expected to go up next door to the plant. The closest residence is now a mile away, and the future, residential development would be about half a mile away, Hansen said.
