Three pending annexations on the west side of the village would bring Romeo Shores, site of a proposed 18-hole golf course, within Romeoville’s boundaries.

The three annexations recently discussed at a special meeting of the Romeoville Village Board involve Romeo Shores and two parcels owned separately by Local 150 of the Operating Engineers Union and the Hartong family.

Romeo Shores is a 207-acre property in unincorporated Will County bought from the village by developers Sherm and Brett Baarstad.

Annexation into the village is part of the sales agreement between the village and the Baarstads, Community Development Director Greg Anderson said.

Once the union’s land and the Hartong property are annexed, Romeo Shores will be contiguous to Romeoville’s boundary line and eligible for annexation.

The Romeoville Shores property, on the north side of Renwick Road west of Weber Road, has been a losing proposition for the village since the town bought it for $2.7 million in 1991.

Shortly afterward, the land was appraised for less than half the purchase price.

The village sold the land in March for $1.06 million. The sale will help the village pay off its debt for the original purchase.

“We’re not making a profit. No, we’re diminishing our losses,” Village Manager Jim Smithberg said.

The Baarstads hope to open the course, to be called Mistwood II, next spring, Anderson said.

The two annexations that would bring Romeo Shores to the village boundary are 107 acres at Lockport-Plainfield Road and Weber Road, and the Hartong property, 117 acres between the union’s property and Romeo Shores.
