All around the town: The entire town of Geneva came out a winner when the town was selected as a regional finalist in a search for America’s Prettiest Painted Places.
Sherri Weitl, publicity director for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber nominated the whole town for recognition in the contest sponsored by the Paint Quality Institute, an industry organization. “It is citywide for us because Geneva has so many beautiful places around town,” Weitl said. “This way, everybody can really feel very proud of participating.”
Architecture in Geneva covers a full spectrum from Victorian painted ladies to stucco bungalows to buildings in Gothic, Renaissance and modern styles, she said.
Geneva is one of three Chicago-area communities named regional finalists in the North-Central Region. Other local nominees were Oak Park and the Cathedral Area neighborhood in Joliet.
Ten finalists were named in six regions of the country, but picking a winner was especially difficult in the North-Central Region because of its architectural diversity and well-maintained communities, according to John Stauffer, director of the Paint Quality Institute.
“We received nominations from so many beautiful towns and cities throughout the region that it was difficult to select just 10,” Stauffer said.

Two finalists from each region will be named in September. They will receive a commemorative plaque and special road signs announcing their distinction.
