If there’s anything more fun than saying mofongo, it’s eating it.

This dense ball of chopped and fried green plantains, studded with pork rinds and garlic, may be one of the highest culinary achievements of Puerto Rican culture – which, we think, says a lot. Sometimes served with a rich cup of chicken broth or gravy on the side, this delicious but decidedly ugly dumpling is served in Bucktown as part of a whole meal at Lydia’s Cafe and the Village Cafe for about $9, but our favorite is served with nothing more than a little gravy at Cafe Central.
