A 43-year-old Buffalo Grove woman was charged Wednesday with aggravated cruelty to animals after she allegedly admitted drowning a pet cat in a pond at Centennial Park, 1301 E. Burr Oak Drive, police said.

The woman’s 14-year-old son allegedly helped in the effort and is to be questioned by police Friday, they said.

Gail Jeffreys, of 118 Downing Rd., was released on a signature bond and ordered to appear in court Sept. 4, authorities said. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $1,000 and a possible jail sentence of up to 364 days.

Police learned of the drowning after the son allegedly told friends about the incident, they said.

Colleen Dorczuk, Arlington Heights Police animal warden, found the body of the orange tabby cat partially submerged in the lake inside a Mickey Mouse pillowcase that had been weighted with a rock and tied with a garbage bag twist, she said.

The family allegedly had experienced problems with the animal urinating in the home and tearing up furniture.
