Steger police will be receiving two pay increases and two additional holidays under a two-year contract approved Monday night by village trustees by a 3-1 vote.

The vote came without comment, and Trustee Anthony Santori voted against the pact. Trustee Jim Johnson recused himself because he said he had a leadership role in an unrelated union.

The contract immediately raises police pay by 4 percent and provides a 3.5 percent salary increase during the second year.

Village President Lou Sherman said the 18 full- and part-time police officers and five dispatchers have been working under the terms of the previous collective bargaining contract, which expired in May. The raise will be retroactive, Sherman said.

“I think it’s a fair contract,” he said.

Police Chief Richard Stultz is the only village law enforcement person not covered by the contract, Sherman said. Trustees reappointed Stultz as chief in May.
