Firefighters, police officers and a postal worker who worked to put out a fire July 2 in the Gingerwood Subdivision were presented with commendations recently.
Special citations were presented by Fire Chief James Berger, who said the five were honored for saving the lives of four boys as they put out a house fire in the 5100 block of Hawthorne Road.
Postal worker Michael McHugh, reacting to a fence fire, alerted four boys watching TV to leave the home. He then ran to a neighbor, who called for fire department help as McHugh took the family’s garden hose to douse the blaze. When Firefighter Randy Ulaskas and Fire Department Lt. Leonard Bonnevier arrived, they found a raging fire.
The fence fire had jumped to a house fire. The two, assisted by Police Officers Chuck Quinn and Eric Wynn, battled the blaze until help arrived.
