Rummaging around: There’ll be no efficiency experts entering Ann Baanb’s Hinsdale home to help rid her basement of stuff. For years, she has offered it as temporary storage space for others’ castoffs, which arrive year-round. The gently used merchandise is eventually offered to the public at the Union Church of Hinsdale’s annual rummage sale in early October.
Every Friday, Baab holds a two-hour sorting bee for volunteers Sis Erdmann, Ditty Hora, Jenny Kubitschek, Betty Nelson and Roz Oetking, who divide donations into a dozen categories–clothing, housewares, office supplies and jewelry among them.
Other helpers arrive the Sunday before the sale to load the mind-boggling array into trucks for transport to the church and three days of setup and pricing.
Proceeds go to a variety of charitable organizations.
Then, as soon as it’s empty, Baab’s basement begins to fill up again.
