A 25-year-old Romeoville fire engine is due for some repairs that are intended to keep it on the road for at least two more years.
The Romeoville Village Board voted Wednesday night to approve a motion to pay up to $5,000 for repairs to the aging fire engine, which will be taken to a shop in Channahon.
If the repairs cost more than the $5,000, the request will have to be resubmitted to the board.
Fire Chief Carl Churulo outlined the repair needs for the Village Board last week. The 1972 model got a new diesel engine and a new transmission nine years ago, Churulo said.
“We will keep pushing on it as much as we can and keep it operational,” he said.
The department has three other fire engines, two 1995 models and a 1986 model.

Churulo said he hopes to replace the 1972 engine, which has a 50-foot ladder, in about two years, possibly with a vehicle with a 75-foot or 100-foot aerial ladder. He noted that the town has several buildings tall enough for firefighters to use an aerial ladder.
